The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum (BTRTM) is a religious and cultural institution located in Chinatown, which houses a relic said to be a tooth from Buddha. It was actually constructed relatively recently (early 2000s), and is not a national monument site (as compared to the two other locations that you will be visiting).
Religion: Buddhism

Did you know?

Just before opening in May 2007, the BTRTM found itself the center of a conspiracy after the media questioned the authenticity of the relic. Ultimately, the Venerable Shi Fa Zhao refused to have his relic’s DNA tested saying, ‘Each of us has different views on what is ‘real,’ as it depends on each individual’s understanding of Buddhism.’

The Sri Mariamman Temple is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Singapore. The first structure was erected in 1827. Over the years, the temple compound was enlarged, and the present-day brick structure was constructed in 1843.
Sri Mariamman Temple was not only a place of worship for the Hindu community. It was also a refuge and shelter for newly arrived Indian immigrants until they found accommodation and work. Like other places of worship, it also functioned as a common space for Indian immigrants to meet and mingle.

Quick Question:
A common space refers to a physical (sometimes even virtual) space where members of a community can interact and build relationships with one another. Why is the Sri Mariamman Temple an example of common space for Indian immigrants in the 1800s?

Jamae Mosque one of the oldest mosques in Singapore and is evidence of the considerably large population of Chulia immigrants who had settled in Singapore's Chinatown district. The present buildling was completed sometime between 1830 and 1835.
The Chulias were Tamil Muslims who migrated to Singapore from South India. Many of them came to Singapore in the 1800s and worked mostly as traders and money changers.
It's architecture is influenced by the Indo-Islamic style, but it also incorporates European features

Importance of maintaining religious harmony

In Singapore, we can see diverse places of worship coexisting peacefully even though they are located close to each other. This is a positive sight, but not something that should be taken for granted.
The key to maintaining religious harmony involves efforts from not just the Government, religious groups, but also citizens.

One way that we can maintain religious harmony is to cultivate common spaces. As you would have learnt just now, common spaces are places where we can interact with one another and share common experiences.

Well done $name!
As you would have learnt in class, identities are complex because different categories such as race, ethncity, religion, nationality, do not match neatly to one another. For example, you can be of the same race and ethnic group as your classmate, but you may have different religions.

Potential Tensions between Religious Groups
Despite efforts to promote harmony between members of different religions, there can be tensions when there is a lack of understanding between different religious groups. At the same time, it is important to note that respect has to go both ways.
Take a look at the following article to look at examples of tensions over the burning of joss paper in the neighbourhood, noise level from different religious activities, etc.
Click here to read this article on The Straits Times>>
Many of these tensions arise over the use of common spaces.

Ultimately, how can tensions be reduced?

Develop greater understading between people of different religions

Having limits as well in order to respect the common spaces of others (e.g. confining the burning of joss papers to authorised receptacles or spaces, having rules regarding the sound volume and time period of events)

What are some other suggestions that you may have?
[[Click HERE to proceed ->endJourney]]
End of Virtual Tour
Congratulations $name, you have come to the end of this virtual journey.
Before you leave, take a look at this quote by Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, K . Shanmugam (2016)

What can you do to help promote greater religious understanding and celebrate diversity in Singapore?
You, $name, can definitely play a part in ensuring that we can live harmoniously in a diverse society.
