The first structure was erected in 1827. Over the years, the temple compound was enlarged, and the present-day brick structure was constructed in 1843. Sri Mariamman Temple was not only a place of worship for the Hindu community. It was also a refuge and shelter for newly arrived Indian immigrants until they found accommodation and work.
